MARRIAGE SHOULD BE VIEWED AS:
The marriage relationship was the first human institution established by God (Genesis 2:24). This permanent relationship was complete and whole with one man and one woman becoming one flesh
-Biblical perspective of Marriage
PRIMARY PURPOSE OF MARRIAGE
God established marriage as a covenant, not a contract (Malachi 2:14; Proverbs 2:16-17).
1. A covenant is based on trust between parties. A contract is based on distrust.
2. A covenant is based on unlimited responsibility. A contract is based on limited liability.
3. A covenant cannot be broken if new circumstances occur. A contract can be voided by mutual consent.
SECONDARY PURPOSE OF MARRIAGE
1. Companionship. The affection, love, and true companionship which grow out of a oneness of spirit as each partner models Christ’s unconditional love (Amos 3:3).
2. Enjoyment. The physical relationship is a reflection of the loyalty and affection shared among marriage partners who have become “one flesh” (Hebrews 13:4).
3. Fruitfulness. The blessing of children in a marriage relationship allows that relationship to reproduce itself physically. It is an example of the “oneness” that results in a marriage (Genesis 1:28; 1 Peter 3:7).
4. Protection. The husband protects the wife by laying down his life for her (Ephesians 5:25). The wife is to protect the home (Titus 2:4-5) and the parents together protect their children to raise up a godly seed (Malachi 2:15; Psalm 112:1-2).
CHILDREN AS A GIFT TO SPOUSES FROM GOD
"Children are the supreme gift of marriage and contribute to the greatest extent to the good of the parents themselves."
- Gaudium et Spes (Ecclesiastical Latin:Joy and Hop
" A gift that encourages them to become adults and brings their lives great meaning."
"Parents tend to have realizations about how much wisdom, compassion, bravery and hope they need to be a good parents."
CHILDREN AS THE SPOUSE’ GIFT TO GOD
Parent's decisions should revolve around fulfilling one's Christian commitments, which, for a married individual, mean first and foremost being a good spouse to their partner and parent to their child.
"Parents needs Christ's grace in their homes or children will fall into a greater pit that holds more monsters than anyone else."
THE FAMILY AS A COMMUNITY OF PERSONS
1. The family finds in the plan of god, the creator and redeemer, not only its identity, what it is, but also its mission, what it can and should be.
2. Family must go back to the “beginning” of god’s creative act if it is to attain self-knowledge and self-realization.
3. God created the family as intimate community of life and love.
4. The family is specified by love.
THE GENERAL TASK OF THE FAMILY
1. Forming a community of persons
2. Serving life
3. Participating in the development of society
4. Sharing the life and the mission of the church
THREE FOLD GOALS OF FAMILY
1. The family provides us in body and mind with the necessities for an ordered family life.
2. The family provides for the procreation and education of children
